Seasonal Positions

Why don’t you join our team at Matakana Berry Co  during our annual strawberry picking and packing season? From October through to early December, we need a large number of seasonal workers to help us with our strawberry harvest.  You must be a NZ Citizen or Resident or have a Working Holiday Visa … any applicants from overseas or in NZ with visitor visa’s will not receive a reply.  We are an RSE Employer which is only open to invited applicants from the participating 9 Pacific Nations.  We are not an SSE accredited employer and are unable to assist with obtaining SSE visa’s.

  • The fruit we pick and pack is destined for both the local NZ market and exported overseas.
  • As our crop comes on stream, we need for good employees for picking in our fields and in our packhouse. Our strawberries are packed in our packhouse at Omaha.
  • Packhouse workers are paid on an hourly rate and Pickers are paid by the kg under contract. Remember that picking and packing work is manual labour and you do need to be fit.

Strawberry Planter/Trimmer/Picker - Fixed Term 06/05/24 to 22/11/24 - Position not open to applications yet.

We are looking for someone local to our area to assist with our annual planting of Strawberries, Trimming and General Maintenance of our plants and picking of Strawberries during our Harvest period.  Our plants are placed into holes in plastic mounds in the ground during our 4 week planting period.   Trimming involves removal of leaves and flowers and other general maintenance around the fields.  Picking of strawberries is by hand into crates.

This is a Fixed Term Contract from the 6th of May 2024 to the 22nd of November 2024.

This position involves bending for long periods of time while performing these tasks.

Hours and days of work change depending on each role being performed.  Work is rostered from Monday to Sunday depending on weather.  Flexibility is required as days and start times change from day to day and week to week and will be communicated to each employee on a day-by-day basis.  Harvest is September onwards and is generally 6am to 11am over 5-6 days per week (weather dependent) with a set rostered day off each week (not necessarily weekends)

Key requirements are:

  • Excellent hand-eye co-ordination.
  • Be able to bend for long periods of time.
  • The ability to work well with others.
  • Able to perform laborious tasks repeatedly (involving bending and kneeling).
  • Must be strong enough to lift heavy objects including crates.
  • Be able to work outside in all conditions (wet weather gear will be provided) and start in the early morning (first light).
  • Be flexible as days and hours of work are set around the crop and weather conditions.

Strawberry Pickers - Positions are not yet open for NZ Residents, NZ Citizens and Working Holiday Visa holders from October to November 2024!

We are looking for Strawberry Pickers to pick our strawberries fresh each day.  Pickers will be required to bend for long periods of time whilst performing this task in all weathers.  This job is for a Fixed Term 5-6 days per week from the early October 2024 to the end of November 2024.  Key requirements are:

  • Excellent hand-eye co-ordination.
  • The ability to work well with others.
  • Able to perform laborious tasks repeatedly (involving bending and kneeling).
  • Must be strong enough to lift heavy objects including crates.

We are looking for Strawberry Packers to pack our strawberries by hand freshly each day.  Packers will be required to stand for long periods of time whilst performing this task.  This job is for a Fixed Term 5-6 days per week from the early October 2024 to the end of November 2024.  Key requirements are:

  • The ability to work well with others.
  • Able to perform laborious tasks repeatedly.
  • Be flexible as days and hours of work are set around the crop.

Relief Cook (1 day per week) - Position not yet open to applications.

We are looking for a local Relief Cook for work one day per week in our staff kitchen cooking Dinners.  Hours are 3pm to 6pm.

  • Knowledge or experience for cooking for a large number of people.
  • A Food Safety Certificate would be an advantage but is not essential.
  • Keen and eager!

Strawberry Gate Sales (Saturdays and Sundays) - Position not yet open to applications!

We are looking for a “Super Star” to man our Strawberry Kiosk located at our gate.  You will be selling strawberries directly to the public and will require someone with the right attitude, trustworthy and honest attributes.  The work is Saturdays and Sundays 9.45am to 4.15pm including Labour Weekend and Labour Day (Monday).  You must be able to commit to each weekend from now until early December.

Employment Conditions

If you are looking for part-time, non-permanent work during our strawberry picking season, and you are not a New Zealand resident, you will need to apply for either a work permit or holiday working visa. Some nationalities are entitled to working holiday visas, so you should get in touch with a New Zealand embassy or consulate in your own country to find out if you are eligible, and then apply to get a holiday working visa before your arrival in New Zealand.

If you cannot get a working holiday visa you will need to get a work permit. For more information about applying for a work permit and/or determining whether you are eligible, please visit the New Zealand Immigration web site.

All workers need a tax number which you can obtain from the Inland Revenue Department. Getting a New Zealand tax number is a straightforward process. Go to https://www.ird.govt.nz/how-to/irdnumbers/ for more information.
